In the face of food security and environmental challenges, we are convinced that innovation lies in making better use of natural resources. With this in mind, we are participating in the Zero-Waste Bivalves for Animal Nutrition project, a European initiative aimed at unlocking the full potential of bivalves, including mussels, oysters, and other shellfish, by applying the principle of full valorization (vierkantsverwaarding).
The ambition is clear: ensuring that every component of the shellfish is transformed into a high-value resource that supports animal nutrition, health, and a more sustainable marine bioeconomy.
Unlocking the Value of Every Bivalve Component
Today, the bivalve industry is primarily focused on food consumption. However, a significant share of the biomass remains underutilized despite its strong nutritional and functional potential.
Through innovative biorefinery processes, the project aims to valorize all fractions derived from bivalves to develop:
- Bioactive extracts for human and animal health applications;
- Functional proteins for human food and animal feed;
- Innovative solutions for aquaculture, including alternatives to live feed;
- Co-products, such as shells and cooking liquids, for technical and industrial applications.
This approach transforms materials that were previously considered waste into valuable resources.
Addressing Tomorrow’s Challenges
Beyond improving the use of marine resources, the project addresses several major challenges.
By developing new processing pathways for bivalves, we contribute to:
- Enhancing the valorization of available marine resources;
- Promoting nutrient recovery;
- Supporting the transition to a circular economy;
- Advancing the development of more sustainable aquaculture practices.
The ingredients developed through the project will undergo both in vitro and in vivo trials, particularly with fish and shrimp, to assess their nutritional performance and their potential for industrial-scale implementation.
Collaborative Research Driving Innovation
The project is coordinated by Wageningen University & Research, a leading institution in agriculture, aquaculture, and animal nutrition. It brings together complementary partners across the entire value chain.
By bringing together industry stakeholders, scientific experts, and key players from across the sector, this public-private collaboration helps accelerate the development of practical solutions for the more efficient use of marine resources.
Innovating for a More Sustainable Marine Bioeconomy
Because food and environmental challenges require collective action, we are proud to contribute to a project that opens new opportunities for animal nutrition.
By unlocking the value of every component of bivalves, we are helping to develop innovative ingredients, reduce resource waste, and foster the emergence of a circular and sustainable marine bioeconomy.
