S ince agriculture is the world’s largest employer and involves more than 40% of the global workforce, developing sustainable agricultural practices makes a significant contribution to sustaining and expanding the many other areas of business that depend upon it. This commitment is underpinned by SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), where we are making our contribution by intensifying the many partnerships we have with graduate schools, universities and non-profits working in culture, sport and solidarity. SUPPORTING CHANGES IN AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES AND TECHNOLOGIES The profound changes now underway in the world of agriculture are triggering dramatic change in the daily lives of farmers and the way they farm. It means that they are having to face new challenges, not only in terms of access to land and resources, but also in learning new systems and tools. Today’s agrotechnical revolutionmakes these systems and tools important performance-enhancing levers for productivity and quality: precision agriculture, extracting value from agricultural data, digital interaction, traceability systems, the emergence of agritech startups, etc. Our contribution to SDGs 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 15 (Life on Land) means that we support and work alongside our agricultural partners to help them cope with these disruptive changes by making them more resilient. 1/3 of the world’s soils are now degraded, largely as a result of unsustainable soil management practices. Transforming food and agriculture to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, FAO, 2018 85% of French farmers use the Internet at least once a day for business purposes Agrinautes Study, 2019 10-25% lower crop yields by 2050 as a direct result of climate change Transforming food and agriculture to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, FAO, 2018 THE CHALLENGES TO BE MET for our operating regions and customers 14% of all food produced worldwide was lost between harvest and sale in 2020 FAO International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (2021) +31% increase in corporate insolvencies* (of all sizes) worldwide between 2019 and 2021 Euler Hermes, 2020 *Legal winding up of registered companies 1/3 of all edible food products for human consumption is lost or wasted per year around the world FAO (2014) 1/5 of young people are not in education, employment or training UN Sustainable Development Goals Report for 2019 COMBATTING FOOD WASTE Food waste imposes unnecessary pressure on global resources, contributing to global warming in the form of greenhouse gas emissions, and imposing excessive pressure on the workloads and incomes of farmers. Waste can occur at many different stages of the food chain, from production through distribution to final consumption. If we are to achieve SDG 12 (Responsible Production and Consumption), then we must make a major shift towards production patterns that will limit the ecological footprint of food production systems. Creating local partnerships on the upstream side of the sector by supporting farmers, and on the downstream side with those involved in distribution and final consumption will also be key to achieving SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and improving food security. RE-ENERGISING LOCAL ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITY The unprecedented health crisis of 2020 has driven a massive increase in unemployment worldwide, not only as a result of mass redundancies, but also because new jobs have not been created. The many uncertainties of 2020 have also weakened companies around the world, causing significant loss of revenues. So as part of our contribution to achieving SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), we are supporting companies and non-profits in our operating regions as they gradually resume operations.
