In 2020, more than 100 submissions were received from 32 countries , and were analysed by an assessment panel of six internationally respected scientists on the basis of the following criteria: scientific excellence, originality and industrial production potential. Two projects ultimately received rewards: one in Plant Nutrition, which looked at interactions between plants and soil microbiota, and the other in Animal Nutrition, which focused on nutritional efficiency. ZOOM #2 NUTRYFERT, THE HI-TECH INNOVATION THAT RECYCLES MINERALS FROM ORGANIC WASTE As part of delivering an appropriate response to the challenges posed by creating a circular economy of resources within the world of agriculture, TIMAC AGRO España has launched its Nutryfert research project to recycle the minerals contained in agricultural waste, and reuse them in the manufacture of new fertilisers. In 2019, Nutryfert won the “Food Chain Accesit” award presented by tech company ADItech and the regional government of Navarra to promote the most innovative ideas for transforming society and the economy. Nutryfert Project Leader and Scientific Adviser to TIMAC AGRO José María García-Mina says that the new technology makes it possible to transform this type of waste into “clean raw material containing assimilable mineral crop nutrients that can also be used in the granulation of mineral fertilisers”. This project was conducted by a consortium of the BACH biological and agricultural chemistry group at the University of Navarra, TIMAC AGRO España, the CMI Roullier and INTIA (the Navarra Institute of Food Technologies and Infrastructures) for the field tests. Development of the Nutryfert technology continued through 2020 in preparation for its future industrial- scale introduction. We’ve succeeded in identifying genes related to the most effective use of certain nutrients, including iron and phosphorus.“ José María García-Mina, Nutryfert project leader Professor Johannes Lehmann, Cornell University (US), a member of the Plant Nutrition assessment panel of the Innovation Awards Roullier ZOOM #3 THE DEVELOPMENT OF ECO-FRIENDLY COSMETICS AT NUWEN Having been a specialist in powdered cosmetics for 30 years, the NUWEN range now offers cleansing, skincare and make-up products designed to restore the natural beauty of the skin. In addition to being preservative-free, powdered cosmetics have many ecological advantages in terms of production. Unlike diluted formulations, this type of product requires less transport, storage and packaging, and generates 100 times fewer CO 2 emissions (source: Addiactive magazine, March 2018). NUWEN continues its long-term commitment to innovation, adopted the criteria of the COSMOS standard in 2017, and now offers 15 COSMOS*- labelled formulations and ingredients. * COSMOS certification promotes the eco-design of cosmetic formulations on the basis of a harmonised European standard. It awards 2 quality signatures: COSMOS NATURAL and COSMOS ORGANIC. The exceptionally high level of innovation shown by the finalists was accompanied by close collaboration between the academic and industrial worlds. We believe that this collaboration is key to success in developing the agricultural solutions of tomorrow.“ 27 26 D iscover t he Innovation A wards Roullier e Ceremony THE PLANT NUTRITION WINNING TEAM: Cécile Monard, Research Fellow at the CNRS and Abdelhak El Amrani, Senior Lecturer at the University of Rennes 1 (France).
